Forum Spammers

Postby Administrator » Mon Jan 10, 2011 7:33 pm

Hi Guys,

Since around New Year, I've done nowt but ban and delete attempted Account Activations by the above type of people, mainly from Russia, Romania & The Ukraine, all using a variety of user names and e-mail addresses from around the world and all automatically generated, again and again and again!

Unfortunately it would appear we already have at least one innocent bystander caught in the crossfire.

I've been thru all 20 pages of members, deleting a few that have turned out to be dodgy. What they want with us, I don't really know?

Please could any registered members who have never yet made a post, please do so if only to say "Hi".

Regards, Paul

What you need to do is add a question to the registration process. My Peugeot scooter forum was getting 100+ spam accounts per day, none of them got through as I had to approve their membership first and they're quite easy to spot. Anyway, the guy in charge of the tech side of the forum added a question: Are You a Spammer with a yes/no tick box.

He said:
The spambots are scripts that just raid forums and sign up (clearly) loads of accounts and spam the forum.
What they aren't programmed to do is answer the question "Are you a spammer" on the registration form, therefore their script will be useless.

Mr admin Paul
Based on my experience on other forums(And NOT scooter forums),all the Spammers wanna do is to cause as much mayhem as poss by posting/or linking as many adverts as poss.
I know it might seem harsh, but isnt it time for a "Cull".
Having briefly clicked on the "members" link, there appears to be about 220 registered members who have not made any posts yet.
I know you work hard behind the scenes and put loads of effort into this, but is there any way of "getting rid of the deadwood" so to speak?

Yes these spam bits can sit for a few weeks / months then advertise dodgy pills from canada and Asia
Sometimes they post poetry and can grab email adresses Inc hotmail ones at the moment
Strongly recomend a cull of ALL non posters they will soon grumble if they are ok browsers
It's happening all over forums at the moment

Hang the lot of em!

As pointed out, is there no way of putting the ole "numbers in clouds" type box in the registration process?

I run a forum and I've seen a massive increase in spambot registrations in the last couple of weeks too. They don't get through because I manually approve all registrations, but it's a pain to have to sift through them all.

I'll get our IT admin to devise a question system as suggested.

It's definitely worth it as the last week or so I was getting around a hundred per day. Since he added the question on Sunday I haven't had one yet. 8-)

I agree they will be automated scripts trying to set up accounts for spamming. As Phil and others have said a question or an image CAPTCHA option should stop them.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CAPTCHA

Does the forum software have one built in you can just switch on?

Also a good idea to make sure the forum is kept up to date with the latest versions and security patches as there will be similar scripts looking for known security weaknesses to hack in with.

Mate of mine's forum got hacked like this.

Cheers,

Hi Guys,

The Webmaster has tightened-up the registration page visual image a bit. It seems to be working because I've only had one tonight instead of @30+

I've got a few UK activations in abeyance, but I'm going to check the g-mail ones again.

Lots of other things to get sorted out too re the site in general.

I will send P/M's to some members who have not yet posted, but who I know are genuine Scooter enthusiasts.

Thanks for all your advice and suggestions so far.
