Latest Project!!

Hi all,

Ever since I got my first scooter, the LML NV that you see in my profile pic, I've fancied a classic Vespa. However, having ridden a fair few, I've not been so impressed with the ride of them. I've always preferring the size and comfort of my LML. The only exception is my Uncle's SS180 with a Polini'd P200 engine in it, but my pockets aren't as deep as his!! I then saw SIP's Glorious Basterd with it's 12 inch GTS wheels and fell in love immediately.

So, I thought, wouldn't it be great to have a scooter with PX size, classic Vespa looks and 12 inch wheels!!

Well, he's how far we've got. As some will know, I work on scooters with my uncle, so massive credit has to be given to his skills. "I think it, he corrects me and builds it" is pretty much how we work!! It's still mid-dry build at the minute, but all of the major hurdles seem to have been overcome now (I say, touching as much wood as possible!!). I'll post more details when it's finished, hopefully in a few months.

Are you leaving the front wheel on the opposite side for a reason? Cheers

Hi Nick,

I've adapted a set of GTS forks to fit, as opposed to buying the SIP kit, hence why the wheel is on the other side.

Lusciousthelock - it's quite a big undertaking to be fair. I've been thinking about it on and off for about 3 years and it has thrown up no end of problems. Basically you need to shift the engine to the right by about an inch to line up the wheels, which then means your flywheel hits the side panel, hence the wider GS160 panels I've used, which need a fair bit of work to get them to fit. You then have to adjust the exhaust so that the wheel doesn't catch. If you do it the way I have, the front forks need adapting to fit the PX frame as they're about 60mm too long and have a different thread at the top. Your mudguard is your next problem as that won't fit the GTS forks, and when it does, will catch the body. That's the main problems so far, I'm sure I'll come across more!!

SIP do a kit to do it, but that only makes the front fork bit easier.

Like I say, I'll post more pics when she's done.

Cheers all,

Leigh.

I've just found this topic for the first time! :O
I always thought that a classic PX with some 12 inch wheels would be awesome...and here you are!
The problem is that MOT this in Spain would be too expensive I guess... :/

Can't wait to see more pics!!

Hi all,

Thanks for the kind comments.

I've got a few hundred miles on it now. I've had a few teething problems through using the old tap and carb, I should have bought new ones!! but that should be fixed now. I'm pleased to report that it rides like a dream with those wheels. It smooths out the ride no end. It actually feels much closer to a GTS than a PX. The increased gearing makes a massive difference as well. As I';m running in I've been sticking to below 50mph and it isn't doing much more than ticking over! I've took it on a couple of short bursts to 60 and it felt very comfortable at that so I am quite excited to see what it will pull flat out!!

I'll keep you all updated. I also hear that it's made the Scootering mag this month!!

Cheers,

Leigh.
