Running lights

Postby sharpcroft » Wed Jan 15, 2014 8:55 pm

Been thinking about fitting some running lights to the scoot either using the mirror brackets as shown or even behind the grill in the horncast taking the +12v feed from the horn so that ignition on will mean lights on, i've had so many d**ks pull out on me recently that any extra viability day or night cant be a bad thing! thoughts?

I looked at these some time ago and could not make my mind up about them. The idea is good and on the photographs of bikes they look ok. I would prefer to see them in action for real before buying.

I've recent fitted some ignition live leds to the PK incase the missus stalls when it's dark... I've put them behind the horncast so they shine out through the grill, and also 2 bright red LEDs inside her rear light. That way if she does stall the scoot will still glow a little and not just dissapear completely. I also fitted 2 flashing LEDs inside the rear light and connected them to the brake light, the normal brake light still comes on, but the additional flashing LEDs give a flickering effect when braking and really grabs yoru attention (I got the idea from the new BMWs that have flashing brake lights under hard braking).

Not got any pics at the moment of it. Basically I found a switched live behind the horn cast (the PK has a junction box there), you could just use the live to the horn. I split the insulation off and joined the front LEDs in there then just earthed the other end. As the PK doesn't have any ignition lives at the rear I also joined in a wire long enough to push through the frame and out into the rear light to feed a DC supply to the rear LED. The flashing ones I used with the brake light, I just joined into the original cables for the brake light in the rear light. A real simple yet effective job.

I've seen the flashing leds and was also considering that for extra visibility, love to see a video of it in action (hint hint) you can also get a box that allows you to vary the pulse/flash of the brake light, it was the horncast grill that i was thinking about illuminating as well, great minds and all that :)

Geezer, where did you get the led's from? Im searching fleabay but i can only find "pulsing" rather than "strobing" led's?
Im after a fast flash/strobe effect so they really catch the eye.

Just eBay m8, they were advertised as flashing LEDs. The advert said they flash around twice a second, but the ones I bought don't flash at the same rate so it looks like a faster flash with more than one fitted. But you can get little strobe ones... I used to have some on a car audio set up in my car boot many years ago.

Im gonna order this
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Motorcycle-Motorbike-Warning-Flash-Strobe-Brake-Lights-LED-White-/370851637692?pt=UK_Motorcycle_Parts&hash=item56587ae9bc
bin the supplied led's and replace with a couple or four 10mm white led's with bezels
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=261365676791&ssPageName=ADME:L:OC:GB:3160
should do the job nicely and should also mount nice and easy inside the original brake light housing through some 8mm drilled holes

Happy days :P

Nice find, I've just ordered myself the flasher unit to have a play... at £1.99 it's gotta be worth an experiment.

Thats what i thought and it states the led's are 3 watts so should be able to run shed loads of the led's i've also posted the link to, im thinking of fitting 4 inside the original brake light and wiring them as pairs so that the outside 2 and inside 2 are paired so i should get
O O O O
followed by
O O O O

Easy to fit, chop the led's off leaving about 6" of wire attached, drill a couple of small holes thru the reflectors, stick the led's in place (they have peel off backs) poke the wires thru from front to back, reattach the wires, connect the other side of the flasher unit to the brake light + and - jobs a good'un

I've fitted the same ones to the PK... wired them up with the original brake light and they look great, really grab your attention.
